Luc van Doorslaer is Full Professor of Translation Studies at the University of Tartu (Estonia), the former President of CETRA (2014-18), the Center for Translation Studies at KU Leuven (Belgium), and Professor Extraordinary at Stellenbosch University (South Africa). From 2016 to 2025, he served as Vice President of EST, the European Society for Translation Studies.<\/span>\u00a0He is journal editor of \u2018Translation in Society\u2019 as well as co-editor of the \u2018Translation Studies Bibliography\u2019 and the five volumes of the \u2018Handbook of Translation Studies\u2019 (John Benjamins).<\/p>\n

He has published widely in the field of translation studies, mainly on his research interests journalism and translation, sociology of translation, imagology and translation, and the institutionalization of translation studies. City Translation Research:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/span>Illustrating the Societal Impact of Translation Studies<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Spurred primarily by the pioneering work of Sherry Simon, city translation research has emerged as a significant subfield within translation studies. While Simon approached the subject largely from a literary perspective, the field more broadly investigates how cities function as spaces of cultural and linguistic exchange. This includes the negotiation of meaning and the influence of both majority and minority languages and cultures within urban environments. Methodologically and epistemologically, the focus on cities also challenges conventional frameworks that analyze language within fixed territorial or linguistic boundaries.<\/p>\n

As earlier research has shown, Central European cities\u2014from Tallinn and Lviv to Trieste\u2014offer particularly fertile ground for city translation, owing to their complex historical layers and diverse perspectives. Translation can be examined in (multilingual) cities, but cities can also be approached as translations (representations). This is evident in the diversity of (street) naming practices, as well as in museums and city branding\u2014varied mechanisms through which urban identities are constructed and translated. This presentation will demonstrate the central role that different forms of translation play in the urban meaning-making process.<\/p>\n

She has been researching and writing about translation and social media for over fifteen years and has published on the subject in a number of other outlets, including The Routledge Encyclopedia of Translation Studies, The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Pragmatics, and in a special issue of Translation Studies on \u201cSocial Translation\u201d. Her most recent work, which has been funded institutionally and nationally, examines translation in the creator, influencer, and gig economies. Virality, isolation and deepening divides could be parts of the world as seen by a translation scholar on a bad day. For each of those terms, one can muster sufficient anecdotes and surprising tendencies to justify blaming huge hidden forces for unleashing evil on us all. Such narratives easily drift into certainties of conspiracy and calls for resistance \u2013 or indeed despair and renouncement. Alternatively, one could admit that no individual is able to see all the data that could justify such generalizations; alternative anecdotes and facts are always available; causation and corresponding guilt are typically complex; and our research must thus begin from active recognition of our initial ignorance. It is thus from an actively recognized uncertainty that we need to act empirically, assuming from the outset that our object of knowledge, translation, exceeds its theorization. This paper will explore empiricist responses to some of the more desperate claims currently made with respect to translation: espistemicide, hegemony, and automation.
