Doelstellingen

Objectives

The translation survey of the Dutch Language Union (2022) shows that there is a large demand for specific classes on translation and interpreting among the departments of NEM, and students, but the necessary infrastructure, training for lecturers, and examples of best practices are lacking. The development of these facilities must take place at an international level, to be able to share the expertise of specific lecturers internationally. Translating and interpreting into and from Dutch is an area that has not been systematically researched so far, which means there is no data to draw up a competence profile of translators and interpreters specialized in Dutch, who see their future in this sector of language services. The competence profile is necessary for the development of syllabi, which are linked to specific professional profiles of the profession of translators and interpreters (sworn translator, interpreter in social services, conference interpreter, medical or technical translator).

The purpose of the session is to create a platform for teaching, translators, and interpreters who work with Dutch, and who are active outside the Dutch language area and are interested in translating and

interpreting in Dutch to exchange views on the aforementioned aspects. Part of the session is also a terminology workshop with a focus on labour law terminology for legal translators, and students.

At the same time, the session is also an opportunity for the creation of the Netwerk Vakvertalen en Tolken NEM. The reason for the creation of the Network is the need to bring together teachers, theorists, and practitioners of translation and interpreting with Dutch as a working language to support professional translation and interpreting from and to Dutch outside the Dutch language area. The core group of the Network project aims to create an information portal, a communication and exchange platform, and lifelong learning tools for professional translators and interpreters, teachers of interpreting and translating Dutch, and students, similar to those for literary translation. The first task of this network could be to map the profile of interpreters and translators in different countries. A competence profile could then be derived from this profile, which would form the basis for the development of a syllabus inspired by the literary translation one (Expertisecentrum Literair Vertalen ELV). These steps could also form the basis for a later established centre of expertise for professional translation and interpreting, regular continuing training for lecturers, and summer courses for students. In line with these objectives, we would like to discuss the topics below with colleagues during the session.

Terminologische workshop

Terminological workshop

The workshop aims to study a number of chosen terms of labour law in Dutch and to record the equivalents, whether existing or not, in the target languages of the participants (Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Slovak, and Czech). For this purpose, a corpus of texts consisting of the Labour Code and the coherent European legal texts will be analysed.

The target group is students, lecturers, and practicing translators who want to expand their knowledge of labour law terminology.

The workshop starts with an introductory lecture and instructions in Dutch, based on which the participants are divided into working groups according to the language combinations. Participation is possible on-site or online. On-site participants are required to register for the TIC conference according to the instructions below.

The participants will receive a terminology database and preparatory material in advance to be able to prepare for the workshop.
