Esperança Bielsa
Esperança Bielsa is Associate Professor of Sociology of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain. Her research is in the areas of cultural sociology, social theory and translation. Her most recent books are Benjamin y la traducción (2024, with Antonio Aguilera), A Translational Sociology (2023), and The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Media (ed., 2022).
The translating animal
The exclusion of non-human animals is a common feature in both sociology and translation studies. I will employ the conceptual and methodological framework of a translational sociology to examine interspecies encounters, focusing on the role of language and translation in relation to distinct cognitive, ethical and aesthetic dimensions. In this context, new issues regarding translation across the human-animal linguistic divide emerge that require a reconceptualization of our received notions about translation and the role of the translator. My presentation will offer a first attempt to address these questions and their significance for the present. More broadly, I will also argue that a translational sociology allows us to relate different types of knowledge, normative commitments and artistic pursuits from a more-than-human perspective.
